My name is Lily Kathryn Whetzel, and I am a representational oil painter based in Southern Utah. I am currently in the BFA program at Utah Tech University. My inspiration is deeply rooted in the beauty of life and nature. In my work, I want to capture the emotional character of a subject, whether it is a portrait or a landscape, focusing on the seemingly small details that easily go unnoticed.
My approach to art is influenced by a desire to understand the world on a deeper level. Loose brushstrokes, broken color, and attention to light and atmosphere are how I convey the mood of a subject. In landscapes, I paint scenes that evoke memories of nature’s delicate yet powerful presence—whether it’s the soft breeze moving through trees, the warmth of sunlight in a canyon, crashing waves, or the ever-changing sky; Just as light changes throughout the day, I want to capture the essence of a moment as it slips away.
I create work to be a space for connection, allowing the viewer to pause, reflect, and find gratitude for the simplicity and beauty surrounding us. In a world so filled with grief and pain, I hope to share a profound appreciation for life through my artwork, offering a moment of peace.
